Park. Founded by homesteaders working the
relatively flat land. There are a number of
churches, a post office, school, gym, library,
gas station, several art and gift galleries, a fish
smoking business, a restaurant, and two
grocery stores.

Many locals are employed in the summer tourism trade,
including charter fishing, and at Glacier Bay National Park.

Angoon is the only permanent settlement on Admiralty

Klukwan is located on the north bank of the Chilkat River,
about 22 miles north of Haines, off the Haines Highway. It
is the only inland settlement in Southeast Alaska.

Petersburg was named after Norwegian
immigrant and a pioneer in the cannery
business, who arrived in the late 1890s. He

Location
Wrangell is located on the northwest tip of Wrangell Island,
between Juneau and Ketchikan. It is near the mouth of the
Stikine River, a historic trade route to the Canadian
Interior.

The Tlingit and Haida peoples have historically
utilized the area around Craig for its rich
resources. In 1972, a large sawmill now
operated by Viking Lumber was built six miles

camp from Hollis to Thorne Bay. Roads were

continuously since 1964. In the early 1980s,

Historical Setting / Cultural Resources
Metlakatla was founded by a group of Canadian
Tsimshians who migrated from Prince Rupert in
1887. Congress declared Annette Island a
federal Indian reservation in 1891. Residents
built a church, school, sawmill, and cannery
and constructed homes in an orderly grid
pattern.

It is a traditional Tsimshian community on the federal
Annette Island Reserve, with an active economy and
subsistence lifestyle.
