Surface water temperature and turbidity measurements collected during the Salmon Escapement Monitoring study downstream from Riffle Reach ••••••••••••••••••• 33 ii INTRODUCTION The purpose of this report is to comply with Article 33 of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) License which states that a water quality monitoring program must be developed to evaluate water temperatures in the lower Bradley River and heavy metal and hydrogen sulfide concentration in Bradley Lake. The monitoring program was developed and presented in the Bradley Lake mitigation plan published in November 1985 (Alaska Energy Authority, 1985). This is the sixth annual progress report and covers water quality data collected during the period -December 1990 through November 1991. Information presented includes intraqravel and surface water temperatures in the Bradley River and surface water temperatures in the North Fork of the Bradley River. Also included are surface water temperature and turbid! ty measurements collected at the Bradley River fish camp by the fisheries study crew during the July to September period. Filling of the Bradley Lake reservoir began in late 1990 and continued through August of 1991. Power production was initiated in September, 1991. Discharge volumes in the Bradley River during the 1991 water quality monitoring period were characteristic of operational flows. Therefore, this report is the first to report on water quality during the operational flow regime. IIETHODS surface and intragravel water temperatures continued to be collected at two-hour intervals utilizing Model DP212 Omnidata Datapod digital recorders as described in the 1988 Annual Water Quality Report (Alaska Power Authority, 1988). Figure 1 depicts the locations of the temperature stations during 1991. The data pods were serviced at approximately monthly intezyals. Some variation in servicing interval occurred because of weather limitations. The longest period between servicing was approximately 6 weeks. Additional surface water temperature and turbidity data were collected during the mid-July to mid-September period by field personnel associated with the Salmon Escapement Monitoring study. This information was collected at the fish camp which is about 150 ft. downstream from the Tree Bar Reach datapod station. Temperature readings were always collected at 8:00 am. Turbidity was usually measured in mid-afternoon. 1 RESULTS The intragravel and surface water temperature data for December 1990 through November 1991 are presented in graphic form by month and by study site. An annual graph has also been produced for each study site. Both the monthly and annual graphs were prepared using a computer program which plots each of the 2 hour temperature readings obtained from the da tapods. No averages were used in plotting the data. Complete printouts of the data are not presented here due to their bulk, but are available upon request from the Alaska Energy Authority. Riffle Reach The record for Riffle Reach is complete except for the period from october 9, 1991 to November 30, 1991. During this period a malfunction occurred either in the data pod or the data storage module (DSM) resulting in the retrieval of erroneous data. Graphs of the surface and intragravel water temperatures for the months December 1 1990 through October, 1991 are presented in Figures 2 through 12 and the annual temperature record is presented in Figure 13. It can be seen from the graphs that intragravel temperature was 0.3 -0.6 degrees warmer than surface temperature during the winter period. Following spring breakup in early April and continuing until late August surface temperatures were somewhat warmer on the average than intragravel temperatures. Diurnal variation in surface water temperature was very evident during the open water period. Tree Bar Reach As explained in the 1990 water quality report (Alaska Energy Authority 1 1990), the Tree Bar Reach temperature probes were damaged by high water in the late summer of 1990. High water and ice conditions prevented the replacement of the probes until April, 1991. The datapod temperature record is complete from April through November with no malfunction. Graphs of the surface and intragravel water temperature for the months April through November are presented in Figures 14 through 21 and the record for the full period April through November is presented in Figure 22. The amplitude of the diurnal variation in surface water temperature during the summer appeared to be substantially greater at the Tree Bar Reach station than at Riffle Reach. Intragravel temperatures during the summer were close to the average of the surface temperature in contrast to the situation at Riffle Reach where intragravel temperatures were generally cooler than surface temperatures. 2 North Fork of the Bradley River Freezing of the temperature probes combined with a series of datapod malfunctions and leakage of water into the station box caused the loss of data for the first half of the year. After two datapod replacements the system again began functioning correctly in late June. An additional loss of data occurred during the period July 20 to August 15 because of weak batteries. The record from mid-August to the end of November is complete. Graphs of the surface water temperature for the months July through November are presented in Figures 23 through 27 and the record for the full period July through November is presented in Figure 28. Miscellaneous Data Surface water temperature and turbidity data collected during the 1991 Salmon Escapement Monitoring Program at the fish camp near Tree Bar Reach are presented in Table 1. RECOIIMBNDATIORS FOR FO"l'URE MORITORIRG Water temperatures will continue to be monitored from Riffle Reach, Tree Bar Reach and the Northfork of the Bradley River. Datapod servicing frequency will continue to be once per month. Greater effort will be made to anticipate datapod problems to increase the success of data retrieval. Water quality monitoring for heavy metal and hydrogen sulphide concentrations in the Bradley Lake reservoir will be initiated in the summer of 1992. Reservoir water chemistry data will be collected in 1992 and again in 1995. It is currently planned to prepare a final summary report in 1995 which summarizes pre-operational and post-operational water quality data and addresses both water quality and fisheries concerns as they may be related to the operation of the Bradley Lake Hydroelectric Project.
