POWER PLANT REPORT 1984
Power production for 1984 set an all time record
20,478,100 KWH. This represents an annual increase
of 6.3%, a 5 year increase of 43%.
Peak demand of 3900 KW occured in November this year
instead of December. A warm December and Alaska Gold
Company shutdown for that month reduced the anticipated
load. Even under these conditions 1,988,800 KW production
for December 1984 exceeds December 1983 by 76,000 KW and
stands as the all time monthly record. The 3900 KW peak
load meant that the Snake Plant was taxed to approximately
96% of it's full load capacity to meet that demand.
The decision to acquire a new generating unit on the last
day of the year was welcome news.
All units were operational and capable of 100% loading
at the end of the year. The one exception being #4
engine a 300 KW unit which had it's fan drive out of
service awaiting repairs.
Engine #1 & #2 each have at least 16,000 hours to go
before overhaul. Engine #3, some 20,000 hours can be
expected. Engine #5 with 6,851 hours at year end
should be good for another 30 to 35 thousand hours
before major overhaul.
We do not have experience on E.M.D. service life under
our conditions but from what we can gather from factory
service people and other operators we should expect
another 10,000 hours from Engine #8 before overhaul.
Page 2
Engine #6 while not very efficeint did give us rather
Maintenance free service this year. This engine
should have a liner, piston, and ring change in 1985.
This unit is costly to overhaul as parts are expensive
and the man hours required are high.
One power plant operator resigned during the year, he
was replaced by a local hire. There was no turnover
in the maintenance staff. We work on a scheduled 40
hour week and call back overtime is a rare occurance.
We perform all maintenance except electronic in house.
A well trained crew of skilled mechanics and operators.
We are proud of the power plant reliability record.
We now have two continuous years without loosing the
buss bar load.
During the summer, a heat exchanger was installed on
Engine #8. This gives us an alternate cooling source
plus the advantage of being able to heat the City water
while operating Engine #8.
Considerable time was spent this past year up-grading
the piping and electrical systems associated with the
power plant.
The annual average KW per gallon for the power plant
was 13.35.
Attached are figures and charts gathered from power
plant records.
