SUBJECT: Waste Heat Feasibility Study Site Visit
Dear Mr. Weinberg:
I would like to thank you, Mr. Versnick, and your staff for their
hospitality and the information provided to me during my visit of
January 17th through the 19th.
I would like to mention a few things that I noticed during my visit
concerning the main boilers and the school fan units. The boilers in
the boiler plant are operating at approximately 6 psi. I asked
Albert if this was the normal pressure and he indicated that the
Sears glycol pump could not push the pressure much higher than that.
The Grundfos pumps that circulate water from the boiler plant to the
school need at least 10 psi at the boiler to prevent cavitation.
When I was there, I could hear the back-check valve downstream of the
pump rattling. This is a good indication that the pump was
cavitating. I recommend the boiler system pressure be increased to at least 10 to 15 psi at the boilers. This will prevent pump
cavitation and increase the life of the pumps.
The time clock in Fan Room #3 was not working. The clock was stuck
in the Monday "on" position (I was there Thursday through Saturday). I also found the outdoor air damper for the fan unit was about 70%
open. Since the fan was not running, I don't believe the outdoor air
damper should have been open. With the damper open, cold air is
constantly being introduced into the building that must be heated. I
recommend that the time-clock be repaired or replaced, and the
controls inspected to ensure they are operating properly. This
should reduce the amount of energy consumed to heat the gymnasium.
Finally, the outdoor air dampers for Fan Units #1 and #2 were fully
closed. I realize this is the most energy efficient mode of operating the heating system, but this does not provide fresh air into the building. If you find that students or teachers complain of
headaches, or stale or stuffy air, you may want to open the outdoor
air dampers a little to provide additional fresh air into the
building.

It does not look as though I will complete the draft waste heat
feasibility study prior to my vacation February 4th through 18th. I
will let you know when I have completed the report. I have enclosed
a copy of the AVEC distribution drawings for Chevak for your files.
If you have any questions, please call me at 1-800-478-7877, or 261- 7291.
