Box AM 701 East Tudor Road Juneau, Alaska 99811 Anchorage, Alaska 99519-0869 CO-SPONSORS MESSAGE The Alaska Power Authority has assumed responsibility for compiling Alaska Electric Power Statistics for the last three years. This year, the Alaska Systems Coordinating Council joins the Alaska Power Authority as co- sponsor of the 1987 Power Statistics. We are confident that this joint effort will result in an enhanced Power Statistics report. Thirty-six school districts have been added to this year's data base, as well as fifteen new industrial power producers, not previously included. The utility data base has also increased by ten new utilities. We welcome your comments on this edition of Alaska Electric Power Statistics and your suggestions for future editions. If you have any questions or comments about the report, please feel free to call Penny Haldane, Statistical Analyst, at 561-7877. pee oes of faen eT SES Robert (Lo 4 S. In previous years, the federal Alaska Power Administra- tion and then the Alaska Power Authority were responsible for gathering statistical data and publishing this annual report. This year's report is a combined effort between the Alaska Systems Coordinating Council and the Alaska Power Authority. This publication includes data on electric utility systems, na- tional defense installations, and industrial facilities that supply power for their own use. Tables and graphs provide different viewpoints on energy use. Most data is presented by regional area of the state. Installed generation capacity, fuel use, and net generation data form a major part of this report. The report also includes infor- mation on transmission line systems in Alaska. The Market Data section presents information on utility sales, revenues, and customers. The table on page 5 presents a five-year summary of installed capacity and net generation for the utility, industry, and military sectors of the state's electric power producers. As of December 1987, 66.6% of installed generating capacity was in the utility sector, 6.8% in the military sector, and 26.6% in the industry sector. Between 1986 and 1987, statewide net generation increased by a modest 1.6%. Natural gas is used to generate over two-thirds of the State's power requirements. The remainder of the State's generation needs are met by hydro (13.6%), oil (12.8%), coal (2.6%), and other (2.6%). Slight differences in totals between pages may occur due to rounding. Installed capacity figures include standby units. Total utility installed capacity reported in 1986 has been revised from 1,681 MW to 1,658 MW. This correction is a result of 22.5 MW hydro installed capacity being reported twice in the 1986 report; once under Terror Lake hydro (which is correct) and again under Kodiak Electric Association (which is incorrect). This is the first year that the following utilities have submitted data: Diomede Joint Utilities, Nelson Lagoon Electric, Ungusraq Power Company (Newtok), Ipnatchiaq Electric (Deering), Atmautluak Joint Utilities, Naterkaq Light Plant (Chefornak), Chitina Electric Company, Kwig Power Company (Kwigillingok), St. George Electric, and City of St. Paul. For purposes of this report "Industry" encompasses oi] companies, fish processing companies, Alaska School districts, and a variety of other private companies. Energy and fuel unit abbreviations are listed on the inside back cover. Regulatory Status: R means regulated by the Alaska Public Utilities Commission as to tariffs. Other utilities' tariffs are not regulated, but they may come under the Commission's review in order to participate in the state Power Cost Equalization Program. Type: P = Private, M = Municipal, F = Federal, S = State, and C = Rural Electrifica- tion Association (REA) Cooperative. Peaks: Peaks are non-coincident and, therefore, cannot be added. Retail peaks refer to the highest monthly peak for the utility's direct service area. Total system peaks include retail customers and sales outside the retail service area.
