Alaska Electric Power Statistics 1960-1985
ECO Alaska Power Authority 7 LIBRARY COPY 047 1960 - 1985 Alaska Power Authority Alaska Electric Power Statistics 1960-1985 Eleventh Edition December 1986 ECO o4 Steve Cowper,Governor | 4L0- DY 1965 Alaska Power Authority State of Alaska ALASKA ELECTRIC POWER STATISTICS 1960-1985 This is the eleventh in a series of statewide electric power data summaries. In previous years, the federal Alaska Power Admini- stration was responsible for gathering statistical data and publishing this annual report. Due to the closeout of Alaska Power Administration's planning activities in July 1985, the Alaska Power Authority assumed responsibility for publication of this important document. We are continuing the efforts of the Alaska Power Administration to provide a current reference on Alaska power system data and trends in statewide electric power use. This publication includes data on electric utility systems, national defense installations and industrial facilities, which supply power for their own use. Tables and graphs provide different viewpoints on energy use; by regional areas of the state, fuel types, types of generation equipment and many other perspectives. The table following this letter, presents a five year summary of installed capacity and net generation for the utility, industry and military sectors. The table describes energy sources and presents percentages of growth between years. At the end of 1985, statewide installed generating capacity totaled 2304 megawatts, a drop of 46 megawatts from the 1984 figure. This change may be attributed to 1985 reporting from the military sector, which excluded some of their facilities in the Yukon region of the state. Seventy percent of 1985 installed capacity was in the utility sector, seven percent in the military sector and twenty-three percent in the industry sector. Statewide, installed capacity in 1985 was 16% higher than the 1981 figure. (Continued) PO. Box 190869 704 East Tudor Road Anchorage, Alaska 99519-0869 (907) 561-7877 Between 1984 and 1985, statewide net generation grew from 6378 GWH to 6724 GWH, showing an increase of 346 GWH. This change represents an increase of 5.4% for combined military, industry and utility sectors, and an increase of 7.9% for the utility sector alone. Sixty-seven percent of 1985 net generation was in the utility sector, six percent in the military sector and twenty-seven percent in the industry sector. Statewide, net generation in 1985 was 28% higher than the 1981 figure. Based upon preliminary data from the Juneau and Anchorage utili- ties, it appears that net generation for the first three quarters of 1986, compared to a similar period in 1985, shows a decrease of about 2 to 3 percent. We suspect that this is a reflection of the overall downturn of the Alaska economy plus the influence of weather. The Alaska Power Authority is pleased to continue the publication of "Alaska Electric Power Statistics." We appreciate the cooper- ation of Alaska's electric industry in compiling this report, and welcome any suggestions for additions or changes in future publications. Robert D.
