Alaska Electrical Power Statistics 1960-1984
Alaska Electric Power Statistics 1960-1984 Tenth Edition December 1985 2 a a > a to Benny Ss eed f= Co Ou” 1900- | 198 4 Alaska Power Authority State of Alaska ALASKA ELECTRIC POWER STATISTICS 1960-1984 This is the tenth in a series of statewide electric power data summaries. In prior years, the Alaska Power Administration (Federal APA) was responsible for the gathering of the statistical data and publication of this annual report. Due to the closeout of the Federal APA's planning activities on July 1, 1985, the Alaska Power Authority assumed the responsibility for publication of this important document. We are continuing the efforts of the Federal APA to provide a convenient and current reference source on Alaska power system data and trends in statewide electric power use. The report has fairly complete data summaries through calendar year 1984 with some monthly data for the first quarter of 1985. Included are data series for the electric utility systems, national defense installations, and self-supplied industrial systems. The following table presents a five year summary of installed capacity and net energy by ownership, types of installation, and energy source. The table also presents data on residential customer use and growth from previous year. Generating plant additions in 1984 totaled 135 megawatts or a 6.1% increase. Net production of electric energy totaled 6.4 billion kilowatt hours with 65% by the utility system. Utility growth for 1984 was 11.9% in Southeast, 7.0% in the Railbelt area, 6.2% in the Arctic-Northwest, and 3.3 in Southwest. The mix of energy production continues to change slightly. Between 1980 and 1984, the share for natural gas increased from 56.4% to 62.3% while the share for oil dropped from 17.0% to 14.1%. The hydro share increased to 9.5% at the expense of oil, due to completion of the Alaska Power Authority's (APA) Swan, Tyee, and Terror Lake Projects. Data sources are indicated on most exhibits and include the Alaska Public Utilities Commission, Department of Energy, Rural Electrification Administration, Edison Electric Institute, and statistics reported directly to APA from various utilities statewide. The Alaska Power Authority is pleased to continue this important effort and we appreciate the cooperation of Alaska's electric industry in compiling this report. We welcome any suggestions for additions or changes in future publications. (Avila Robert D. Heath Executive Director TABLE OF CONTENTS PAGE NO.
