ECO 046 “ALASKA ELECTRIC POWER STATISTICS 1960—1983 Alaska Power Authority LIBRARY COPY NORTH WEST AREA J, Ss pf» wo 2 a INTERIOR =, AREA SOUTH WEST Y) GULF OF ALASK, NINTH EDITION SEPT. 1984 UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY ALASKA POWER ADMINISTRATION S r cary Energy, See er iiecncal Gees wee fee MA edie tces ‘ave in Juneau, Alaska, with field offices at the two projects. Department Of Energy Alaska Power Administration P.O. Box 50 J , Alaska 99802 . a ail hii Alaska Electric Power Statistics 1960-1983 This is the ninth in a series of statewide electric power data summaries compiled by the Alaska Power Administration (APA). It continues the efforts by APA to provide a convenient and current reference source on Alaska power system data and trends in statewide electric power use. The report has fairly complete data summaries through calendar year 1983 with some monthly data for the early part of 1984. Included are data series for the electric utility systems, national defense installations, and self-supplied industrial systems. Several new, small utilities were added to the data this year. The following table presents a four-year summary of installed capacity and energy produced with breakouts in ownership, types of installation, and energy source. The table also has select data on residential use and consumer costs. Generating plant additions in 1983 totaled 73 thousand kilowatts, or a 3.5% in- crease. Net production of electric energy totaled 6.0 billion kilowatt hours with 64% by the utility system. Utility growth for 1983 breaks down into 6.9% in Southeast, 3.0% in the Railbelt area, 14.1% in the Arctic-Northwest, and 11.3% in Southwest. The data on rates of growth appear a little erratic--Statewide utility net generation increased 3.5% in 1981, 13.2% in 1982, and 3.9% in 1983. Data for the first 6 months of 1984 show loads increasing at a 7.6% pace. These changes will play havoc with some forecast models. Much of the year-to-year shift may be caused by unusually warm or cold weather. Some of the shift could be oscillations of economic recovery from the post-pipeline slump. The mix of energy production has not changed very much in recent years. Between 1980 and 1983, the share for natural gas increased from 56.4% to 60.1% while the share for oil dropped from 17.0% to 15.6%. The hydro share will increase by about 1%, at the expense of oi1, in 1984 due to completion of the Alaska Power Authority's (APAuth.) Swan, Tyee, and Terror Lake projects. The hydro share of total installed capacity will increase from 7% to about 94%. Solomon Gulch hydro, the first APAuth. project, has been included with Copper Valley Electrical Association's 1982 and 1983 data. As in other parts of the country, consumer power costs have increased significantly in recent years. The 16% increase from 1982 in the state- wide average for residential customers results mainly from a 30% rise in Anchorage area rates. The 1983 average of 8¢/Kwh encompasses a wide deviation--from 7¢/Kwh in the Southcentral region to 34¢/Kwh in the Arctic-Northwest. The Southeast rate was 8.2¢/Kwh, Yukon 10.2¢/Kwh, and Southwest 26.2¢/Kwh. Data sources are indicated on most exhibits and include the Alaska Public Utilities Commission, Department of Energy, Rural Electrification Administration, Edison Electric Institute, and statistics reported directly to APA from various utilities statewide. We appreciate Alaska's electrical industry cooperation in compiling this report and welcome any suggestions for improvement in future publications. Vee Robert J.
