Alaska Electric Power Statistics 1960-1982
Alaska Power Authority LIBRARY COPY 1960 - IALASKA ELECTRIC POWER STATISTICS 1960-1982 EIGHTH EDITION = AUGUST 1883 UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY ALASKA POWER ADMINISTRATION ECO 046 i960 - 1982 DATE ISSUED TO ——— The Alaska POWeE! Alii. crommmtcenprrmereepremmmeesNLEDINUSA Inlickets power for Alaska's two Federal hydroelectric projects—-the 30,000—kw Eklutna Project near Anchorage and the 47,160-kW Snettisham Project near Juneau. APA also conducts investigations of future water and power projects as well as studies of transmission and power system development, all in cooperation with other Federal, State, and local entities. APA was established in June of 1967 as a unit of the Interior Department and became a unit of the Department of Energy on October 1, 1977, as provided under Public Law 95-91. APA reports to the Assistant Secretary of Energy, for Conservation and Renewable Energy. The APA headquarters are in Juneau, Alaska, with field offices at the two projects. Department Of Energy Alaska Power Administration P.O. Box 50 Juneau, Alaska 99802 FOREWORD: Alaska Electric Power Statistics 1960-1982 This is the eighth in a series of statewide electric power data summaries compiled by the Alaska Power Administration (APA). It continues the efforts by APA to provide a convenient and current reference source on Alaska power system data and trends in statewide electric power use. The report has fairly complete data summaries through calendar year 1982 with some monthly data for the early part of 1983. Included are data series for the electric utility systems, National defense installations, and self-supplied industrial systems. The following table presents a four-year summary of installed capacity and energy produced with breakouts in ownership, types of installation, and energy source. The table also has select data on residential use and consumer costs. Net production of electric energy totaled 5.7 billion kilowatt hours with 65% by the utility system. Total 1982 energy production was 8.9% above the prior year; energy produced by the utilities in 1982 was 13.1% above the prior year. Much smaller growth occurred in each of the three previous years. More detailed data presented in the report show large increases in 1982 in the Anchorage-Cook Inlet, Fairbanks, and Juneau areas as well as for many smaller utility systems. Based on the general level of economic activity throughout the State, it appears likely that similarly large increases may prevail over the next few years. Generating plant additions in 1982 totaled 41 MW, or a 2% increase. The mix of energy sources has not changed very much in recent years. Between 1979 and 1982, the share for natural gas increased from 55.9% to 59.1% while the share for oil dropped from 17.9% to 15.2%. The hydro share will increase somewhat in the near future with completion of the several projects in the State Power Authority program. As in other parts of the country, consumer power costs have increased significantly in recent years. Statewide averages for residential customers in 1982 was 6.7 cents per KWH, a 34% increase since 1979. Rates remain much higher for most smaller systems. Data sources are indicated on most exhibits and include the Alaska Public Utilities Commission, Department of Energy, Rural Electricfication Administration, Edison Electric Institute, and statistics reported directly to APA from various utilities Statewide. We appreciate Alaska's electrical industry cooperation in compiling this report and welcome any suggestions for improvement in future publications. 7 a , } Robert J.
