POWER STATISTICS 1960-1976 UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR June 16, 1967, as a new bureau in the Department of the Interior. It is headquartered in Juneau, Alaska. _The general function of APA is to promote the develop- ment and utilization of the waters, power, and related resources of Alaska. : f f a United States Department of the Interior ALASKA POWER ADMINISTRATION P.O, 8O%x'5Q IGNEAU ALASKA 99802 August 3, 1977 ALASKA ELECTRIC POWER STATISTICS 1960-1976 This is the fifth in a series of electric power data summaries compiled by the Alaska Power Administration. This is a continuing effort by APA to provide a convenient and current reference source on Alaska power system data and trends in Statewide electric power use. This report presents fairly complete data summaries through Calendar Year 1976 plus some monthly statistics through May 1977 to indicate trends during the peak load periods of the 1976-1977 winter. The report lists total installed generating capacity of 1,441 megawatts, or 23 percent above the 1975 listing. Nearly all the increase is in oil and natural gas-fired generators. Of the total, 972 megawatts are in service for utility systems, with the balance in industrial and national defense systems. For Alaska's electrical utilities, the total energy demands in 1976 were just under 2.6 billion kilowatt-hours, or 12 percent above the 1975 levels. The energy sources were: natural gas, 58%; oil, 15 percent; hydroelectric, 15%; and coal, 12 percent. National defense systems produced an additional 540 million kilowatt-hours. Adding a rough estimate for self-supplied industrial power system, total elecirical energy use in Alaska for 1976 was about 3.5 billion kilowatt-hours. The mild winter of 1976-1977 is apparent from the data on peak system demands. Mid-winter peaks in both the Anchorage and Fairbanks areas were somewhat below the previous year. However, demands in the spring of 1977 were about 10 percent above the 1976 levels. The statistics on consumer use show generally smaller increases than in Past years, which is probably due to the conservation efforts and weather. Consumer costs rose sharply in all regions of the State. Average residen- tial charges were 3.9 cents per kilowatt-hour for 1976, compared with 3.4 cents in 1975. For those systems depending on diesel fuel, the price increase was of course much higher. Consumer costs in many cities are in the 8 to 10 cent per kilowatt-hour range; costs in the remote villages are even higher. EGS O46 1940- 1996 2 The data sources are indicated on the tables. These sources include the Alaska Public Utilities Commission, the Federal Power Commission, the Rural Electrification Administration, the Edison Electric Institute and statistics reported directly to APA from various utilities Statewide. We appreciate the cooperation we have received from Alaska's electrical industry in compiling this report and will. welcome any suggestions and corrections. Kibutp Clr Robert J.
