Re: Support of Alaska Renewables’ REF Round 15 grant application
Dear Grants Coordinator:
Consistent with Homer Electric Association’s (HEA’s) Board Policy 505 – Renewable
Portfolio Goal, HEA supports Alaska Renewables LLC's request for funding via AEA's REF
Round 15. Large, economic, near-term renewables are needed to reduce our dependence on Cook
Inlet natural gas, diversify risk among our energy sources, and be prepared for possible mandatory
renewable portfolio standards. HEA constantly considers those projects that may furnish that
diversification while providing downward pressure on future rates to its Members.
Alaska Renewables LLC has the engineering and commercial experience and the necessary
understanding of the constrained Railbelt grid that is required for large infrastructure projects to
successfully come to fruition in Alaska. We are eager to see their projects advance into final design
and permitting and potentially deliver value for HEA Members.
All resource assessment work done through REF grants become public information and
HEA prefers that all parties – Independent Power Producers and possible off-takers such as
Railbelt Cooperatives – have access to as much information as possible to identify and assess those
prospects with the best potential to offer economies of scale and/or lower integration costs to all
consumers on the Railbelt by helping offset current natural gas, naphtha, and coal consumption
with the most cost-effective renewable energy projects.
