Seward Heat Loop District
To Whom It May Concern:
The City of Seward Parks and Recreation Department enthusiastically supports the Seward Heat Loop
District project. The community continues to seek greener alternatives as well as overall improvements to
the parks and public areas. The heat loop is a great project toward those goals. We understand that the
bulk of the infrastructure will be buried underground near our Branson Pavilion, Evan Casey Skate Park,
Community playground and Adams Street restroom. Existing uses of this area should not be impacted, as
we understand the project. The loop will serve the community library/museum, City Hall and beyond.
Perhaps we are most enthusiastic about the potential for spur -loops or additional loops. We anticipate
savings and reduction in carbon footprints when we are able to convert all of our outdoor restroom
facilities to be serviced by the Heat Loops. These include the Community Center which houses the Senior
Citizens' Center, the teen Rec Room and the Teen & Youth Center; Kawabe Park, bus stop and restroom;
Adams Street restroom, Wellington restroom, Little League restroom, Harbor Uplands (Mariners'
Memorial) restroom and eventually the Forest Acres Park restroom. Increased business has put a heavy
demand on our very few public showers. We anticipate this kind of improvement to allow affordable
expansion of these basic, public services. We also devote too much time, equipment and NON -renewable
resources to winter sidewalk maintenance in all of these areas. When the City can add heated water to the
sidewalks, our expenses should drop dramatically and allow us time to redirect our staff time to more
proactive, recreation and maintenance activities. We do imagine the possibilities!
The location for these underground amenities serving the public is in concert with our exiting Master
Plans, park plans, Capital Improvement Plans and improvement ideas. We wholeheartedly endorse this
project and its location as we anticipate expansion to further serve the public more effectively and
efficiently.
