HomeMy WebLinkAbout150915-InianIslandsInstitute_Elfin_Hydro_Support_LetterInian  Islands  Institute   P.O.  Box  225   Gustavus,  AK  99826     September  15,  2015       To  Whom  It  May  Concern,     Greetings,  my  name  is  Zachary  Brown,  the  founder  and  executive  director  of   Inian  Islands  Institute.    Our  non-­‐profit  organization  is  situated  at  the  Hobbit  Hole,  a   remote  property  on  the  Inian  Islands,  five  miles  to  the  north  of  Elfin  Cove.         Inian  Islands  Institute  fully  supports  Elfin  Cove’s  hydroelectric  future.    As  a   program  for  environmental  education,  research,  and  leadership,  we  believe   fervently  that  reducing  fossil  fuel  consumption  is  crucial  for  our  global  future.    All   communities,  no  matter  how  small  and  remote,  have  a  role  to  play  in  reducing   emissions  and  mitigating  climate  change  and  ocean  acidification.     Moreover,  we  at  Inian  Islands  Institute  recognize  that  Southeast  Alaska,  with  its   steep  topography  and  high  precipitation,  is  a  world  hotspot  for  hydropower  –  this   energy  source  makes  too  much  sense  to  ignore.    Remote  communities  such  as  Elfin   Cove  can  enhance  their  self-­‐sufficiency  and  reduce  dependence  on  outside  resources   by  making  the  exciting  transition  to  hydroelectric  power.    The  Hobbit  Hole  property   is  powered  by  hydro,  as  are  Gustavus,  Juneau,  a  portion  of  Hoonah,  and  other   communities  of  northern  Southeast  Alaska.    It  is  time  for  Elfin  Cove  to  join  in   utilizing  this  wonderful  resource.     Thank  you  for  your  consideration,     Zachary  Brown   PhD,  Stanford  University   Executive  Director,  Inian  Islands  Institute
