BOX 19110 THORNE BAY, ALASKA 99919 (907) 828-3380 FAX (907) 828-3374 www.thornebay-ak.gov September 16, 2014 Alaska Energy Authority 813 W. Northern Lights Blvd. Anchorage, AK 99503 To Whom it May Concern; We are writing to show our support for Southeast Island School District's application for a heat energy grant from the Alaska Energy Authority. The district plans to replace boilers in Thorne Bay with two that are more suited to the size of the facility and to move those to smaller schools; Hollis and Whale Pass. Additionally, the district is seeking to convert to the wood fired boiler system at Naukati School. We support this effort of the school district to save funds spent on expensive diesel fuel and to thereby, free up more funds that can directly benefit our children. Fuel prices continue to run high in Thorne Bay, as well as other communities on Prince of Wales Island, with the price right now at $4.10 per gallon for fuel oil. One local business has already established a cord wood business for supplying fuel to wood fired boiler. Increasing the size of the Thorne Bay School boilers will enhance this business and additional boilers at other schools will provide opportunities for other cord wood businesses on Prince of Wales Island. In short, we fully support this application for replacing systems reliant on fossil fuels to a system proven to be efficient, non-polluting, and sustainable. Sincerely, Wayne Benner, City Administrator Cell: (907) 254-2554 Email: administrator@thornebay-ak.gov
