Re: Applicant Tlingit -Haida Regional Housing Authority
Funding Opportunity AEA Renewable Energy Fund Round VIII
We are pleased to offer support of the Tlingit-Haida Regional Housing Authority (THRHA) request
for funding of a solar energy system to serve our local low-income housing. THRHA is the Tribally
Designated Housing Entity that provides low-income housing and services to our community as
designated by t he Organized Village of Kake (OVK) – a Federally Recognized Tribal Government ,
established in 1947 by our local native population as the contemporary government for the Kake
Indians.
In recent years the two traditional economic mainstays of Kake was logging and fishing, these
industries have virtually collapsed. This breakdown has had a major impact on the economic and
social health and welfare of our community. Kake ha s been struggling under the pressures of
economic hard time. The continued viability of Kake depends on reducing the cost of living to
allow Tribal citizens to remain living in their community of origin.
We are committed to serving our Tribal citizens and we are pleased that THRHA will install an
efficient solar-generated alternative energy system for residents of low-income housing. We feel
that solar energy is a viable option in our community, having installed two PV arrays in 2012, in
part as a demonstration project to prove the viability of solar energy production in Kake. Our
system provides solar-generated electricity to meet a good share of our tribal government office and
thus offset our high cost of electricity from our local grid – we proved that solar energy generation
does work in Kake and is cost -effective. In addition to the cost savings, alternative & renewable
energy such as the proposed PV system for our Kake Alaska low-income apartment complex, it is
the right thing to do for the planet and our grandchildren’s future and helps stay on-track with the
State of Alaska goals for alternative/renewable energy.
Please feel free to contact me for further information regarding our support and experience with our
PV array system – either by office phone 907-785-6471 x111, cellphone 907-321-3577 or email at
GEWilliams@KakeFirstNation.org . Thank you in advance for providing funds for THRHA’s solar
energy project and the resulting positive effects.
Sincerely,
Gary E. Williams
