We are writing to show our support for Hydaburg City School District's application
for a heat energy grant from the Alaska Energy Authority. The project involves
placing cord wood fired boilers at the Hydaburg City Schools in Hydaburg, AK on
Prince of Wales lsland in Southeast Alaska. The district intends to use wood
biomass to heat the school buildings, replacing diesel as the energy source.
They propose installing four wood fired boilers adjacent to the school site and
running underground pipes from the wood fired boiler to plumb into the school's
hydronic heating system. They would leave the existing oil furnaces as back-up
but would be able to offset 80-90% of the fuel consumption.
Wood is available to be cut from Haida Corporation lands easily accessible to the
village. The Corporation would allow memberslshareholders cutting permits,
enabling them to make additional income in this area of few employment
opportunities. We fully support this application for replacing systems reliant on
fossilfuels to a system proven to be efficient, non-polluting, and sustainable.
