RE: Support for the Yerrick Creek Hydroelectric Project
Dear President Demit,
I am writing on behalf of the Denali Commission (Commission) to offer our support to the
Native Village of Tanacross (NVT) and your plans to develop the Yerrick Creek Hydroelectric
Project (Project). Like the Tanacross Village, the entire Upper Tanana Subregion is experiencing
electricity costs at upwards of $0.51 per kilowatt hour, which is causing economic distress to
residents and businesses. The Commission supports any project that reduces the cost of living for
rural Alaskans. It is our understanding that the Project with the cooperation of Alaska Power and
Telephone, will help to decrease the high cost of power for residents of the Upper Tanana
Subregion.
As you are aware, the Commission has been working with NVT staff on project implementation
of the Tanacross Multi -Purpose Community Health Center Project by providing construction
management advice, assisting in the development of contractor procurement packages, and the
contractor selection process. Commission staff stands willing and able to assist NVT with
similar technical assistance for the proposed Project.
