(AVEC) is requesting funding from the Alaska Energy Authority Renewable Energy Fund, Round VII, for design and permitting of a hydroelectric project in the Cosmos Hills. The hydroelectric facility would serve Kobuk, Shungnak, and Ambler. The project is crucial to stabilizing energy costs in these communities, which is important since they experience some of the highest energy costs in the State of Alaska. Costs are especially high because often barge fuel delivery to the villages is impossible due to low water in the Kobuk River. AVEC and NANA have been studying the hydroelectric potential in the region for the last four years. It has been determined that hydropower is feasible in the region. NANA fully supports this important project and AVEC's request for AEA funding for the design and permitting phase. AVEC is welcome to include this letter in the grant application package. NANA's in -kind contribution is attached to the letter.. Sincerely, Sonny Adams , Project Manager NANA Regional Corp. The Cosmos Hills Hydro project has the potential to significantly lower the cost of electricity for the communities of Ambler, Shungnak and Kobuk and could potentially allow space heating of households with electricity. This would make the 3 communities less dependent on imported Diesel fuel and lower cost of living. Development of an electric intertie (power -line), between Ambler and Shungnak and the construction of a Hydro project, takes a lot of planning and preliminary work. At this time more funding is needed to keep the stream gages functional and allow for final data collection and conceptual design. Support is also needed to show funding agencies that the communities want to see progress in this effort. This questionnaire looks for the local support in this venture.
