HomeMy WebLinkAboutCBY RESOLUTIONCITY AND BOROUGH OF YAKUTAT, ALASKA RESOLUTION 13- 207 A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE YAKUTAT BIOMASS HEATING LOOP GRANT APPLICATION WHEREAS: the City and Borough of Yakutat has a program seeking to lower the cost of energy throughout the community, and WHEREAS: the public in Yakutat has consistently expressed a desire to increase the independence of Yakutat in terms of energy production, and WHEREAS: the community has identified the goal of increasing the use of local renewable sources of energy, and WHEREAS: biomass energy derived from forest products is an abundant source of heat energy in Yakutat, and WHEREAS: the City and Borough of Yakutat wishes to reduce the operating costs of municipal buildings, and heating fuel is one of the most expensive elements of operating public buildings, and WHEREAS: biomass district heating loops fired by wood boilers are a proven renewable energy technology, and WHEREAS: replacing oil furnaces in several public buildings with a central wood -fired boiler is an important step in the overall program to lower costs and increase independence, and WHEREAS: utilizing beach wood will demonstrate the feasibility of this supplemental biomass source in conjunction with wood -fired boilers, thus potentially informing other communities in Alaska as to a viable energy source, and WHEREAS: the community of Yakutat wishes to assist other Alaskan communities wherever possible in meeting their similar challenges with expensive energy, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Assembly of the City and Borough of Yakutat wishes to express support for the Yakutat Biomass District Heating Loop Project and for the grant application to the Alaska Energy Authority to be submitted by CBY staff.
