RE: Native Village of Cantwell Carlo Creek Hydro — Reconnaissance Study
Dear Ms. Nicklie:
Denali National Park and Preserve (DNP) is on record as supporting study of the micro -hydro that the
Native Village of Cantwell (NVC) is proposing at Carlo Creek.
Executive Order 13514 encourages Agencies to consider purchasing/ using renewable energy. Once the
NVC hydro project is operational, DNP hopes to purchase some or all of the power produced, or the
equivalent environmental attributes of the project, to the extent authorized by the Federal Acquisition
Regulations.
Carlo Creek drains approximately 12 square miles of the Alaska Range. The proposed run -of -river hydro
project would divert an estimated 50 cfs from Carlo Creek at an elevation of approximately 2,700 feet,
divert it through an approximately 6,000 to 10,000 foot long penstock to a powerhouse in the vicinity of
the Parks Highway at an elevation of 2,000 to 2,200 feet. Estimated installed capacity is 1.5 MW, and
annual energy generation is estimated at 5,256,000 kWh per year. For comparison, DNP annually
consumes an average of 1,080,000 kWh in the Entrance Area of the Park.
The reconnaissance study would investigate the environmental, technical, economic, and political
viability of a hydro project at Carlo Creek in order to determine if a viable project configuration exists
that warrants a more detailed feasibility study.
Thank you for your consideration. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
