Re: AEA Round VII - Tazlina Wood Boiler System
Dear Mr. Young:
Increasing energy costs threaten the social, health and economic welfare of the residents in rural
Alaska. The Native Village of Tazlina is taking proactive steps to mitigate the negative effects of
rising energy costs I their community and have embarked in the planning process to replace their
existing fossil fuel heating system in exchange for a wood fired boiler system.
The Ahtna Land Department manages over 300,000 acres of commercial forest lands within a 20-
mile radius of the Native Village of Tazlina. These forested lands contain extensive stands of white
spruce, black spruce and poplar tree species. This renewable energy source is in abundance with
volumes ranging from 20-80 tons per acre and would be a prime resource for the Native Village of
Tazlina to harvest in their efforts to displace non-renewable fossil fuels.
Ahtna, Incorporated fully supports the effort by the Native Village of Tazlina to reduce the cost of
energy in their community and will collaborate with them to maintain sound forest management
and ensure a steady supply of woody biomass of at least 40-cords annually for their wood boiler
system.
Sincerely,
r'
