Dear Alaska Energy Authority,
No one really thinks about what happens after we flush the toilet, but thankfully, we also don’t
have to think about cholera and dysentery in our modern age. This is because of the environmental
technologies of waste water treatment plants. Waste water treatment plants are the unsung heroes of
our nation. Most people don’t even know where they are in the community, how they work, or why
they are so important. But if we didn’t have them, we would surely be dealing with a bucket of
problems.
In the spirit of appreciating waste water treatment facilities and investments in critical
community infrastructure, the Sitka Conservation Society would like to express our support for the
City of Sitka’s application for using heat-pump technology. Just as waste water treatment plants use
biological technology and harness the power of nature to clean effluent into safe discharge materials,
the heat pump proposal uses the power of physics and the latent and generated heat in the effluent to
create space heating. This is a win-win scenario that will result in cost savings and the reduction of
greenhouse gas emissions.
The proposal put forth by the City of Sitka for the waste-water treatment plant is innovative,
creative, and utilizes the best and most appropriate technology for heating. We hope that you will
consider this proposal and make the investment in this program.
Sincerely,
Andrew Thoms
