The Friends of the Juneau Public Library is a special group in a unique
community.The Friends operates a Second Hand Book Store,known locally
as the Amazing Book Store,and has been doing so for almost 30 years.All
the tens of thousands of books for sale are donated and all the workers
(approximately 40 giving 2 to 30 hours a week)are volunteer.Unmarked
paper backs are a quarter,and hard covers are a $1.
The Friends of the Juneau Public Library Board strongly endorse a
geothermal heating system for the new Mendenhall Valley Public Library.
This is not an empty endorsement,but one in which our Board has
committed $1 million dollars in cash toward the new library,in addition to
our ongoing direct support for library programs and early childhood literacy.
We have already contributed $225,000 and are prepared and scheduled to
give the remainder,spring 2014.
Our strong support for a geothermal heating system includes the following
reasons:
1.This heat source is renewal and eco-friendly.We believe this is the
energy of the future.
2.The public library is an educational facility.Many people will come
through its doors.This will be an ongoing public demonstration on
Its practicality and efficiency with savings both to the environment
and to the taxpayers.This will be a powerful seed germinating fresh
approaches for heating other buildings and even our homes.
3.This heat system will reduce the burden on the library operating
budget.Lower cost utilities will mean increased services to the
community.
With your support,paralleling our strong endorsement,we look forward to
installing a geothermal heating system in the new Mendenhall Valley Public
Library.
