The Carlo Creek watershed drains approximately 12 square miles of the Alaska Range. The proposed run -of -river hydro project would divert an estimated 50 cubic feet per second of stream water from Carlo Creek at an elevation of approximately 2,700 feet, pass the water through an approximately 6,000 to 10,000 foot long penstock to a powerhouse near the Parks Highway at an elevation of between 2,000 to 2,200 feet. The estimated installed capacity of the generator is 1.5 megawatts. The estimated annual electric generation is 5,256,000 kilowatt-hours per year. Golden Valley Electric Association feels such a reconnaissance study would explore the creek's potential and is supporting the Native Village of Cantwell - which is a member of the GVEA electric cooperative - in its efforts to secure funding for this study. GVEA supports renewable energy projects within its service area. In 2005, the GVEA Board of Directors adopted a Renewable Energy Pledge calling for 20 percent of GVEA's system peak load to come from renewable energy by the end of 2014. As such, GVEA believes this REF application by the Native Village of Cantwell earns and deserves this coop's full support and should be supported for the available funding.
