RE: Native Village of Cantwell Carlo Creek Hydro — Reconnaissance Study
Dear Ms. Fisher -Goad:
Ahtna, Incorporated supports and asks the state for funding the Native Village of Cantwell
to conduct a reconnaissance study of the hydroelectric potential of Carlo Creek near
Cantwell.
Carlo Creek drains approximately 12 square miles of the Alaska Range. The proposed run -
of -river hydro project would divert an estimated 50 cfs from Carlo Creek at an elevation
of approximately 2,700 feet, divert it through an approximately 6,000 to 10,000 foot long
penstock to a powerhouse near the Parks Highway at an elevation of 2,000 to 2,200 feet.
Estimated installed capacity is 1.5 MW, and annual energy generation is estimated at
5,256,000 kWh per year.
It is vitally important for the State of Alaska, Native Village of Cantwell, and Ahtna to
develop this highly accessible site for the rail -belt communities. Small hydro projects like
these can often be developed on a faster schedule and at lesser risk than the mega -
projects currently underway.
Thank you for your support of this project and no not hesitate to contact me if you have
any further questions.
Sincerely,
Kathryn Martin, VP Land and Resources
