$4 million Department of Education Capital Improvement Project upgrade to GILA gym completed summer 2011
Remodels included upgraded roofs, wall panels, windows, and electrical to increase energy efficiencies
Galena City School District submitted a $1.1 Department of Education Capital Improvement Project grant request in September of 2012 for GILA’s main classroom and administrative building (Composite Building)
Grant request would replace the Composite Building roof with a new roof conducive to interior Alaska climate resulting in reduced maintenance costs and increased energy efficiency
GILA campus is using approximately 230,000
gallons of diesel fuel a year
Estimated that there is approximately 5 years
left of transition fuel
Operations on the GILA campus will be
unsustainable if diesel fuel is still the primary
fuel source when the transition fuel is consumed
An alternative, renewable, and sustainable energy
solution is necessary to ensure continued
educational program offerings on the GILA
campus

Tremendous statewide and regional resources located in Galena, Alaska that need to be protected
Community of Galena is poised with available funds to begin the process of determining a biomass resource inventory
Biomass resource inventory would be a first step towards developing a resource management plan followed by a business management plan
Could potentially serve as a model for other partnerships between regional corporations, village corporations, tribal governments, and city governments
