This letter is to express the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities support for Alaska Gateway School District's (AGSD) Biomass Heat Loop Project being submitted to the Alaska Energy Authority. I am the Superintendent for the Tok District. Tok is the central office from which we maintain the highways and airports in eastern Alaska. We have over 1,700 lane miles of roads, 7 maintenance stations and 6 airports. We are responsible for the safe movement of people, goods and services through these assets. The rising cost of heating fuel is cutting deeper into our budget. We are interested in purchasing lower cost heat from this heat loop if it becomes available. In Tok, we have our office, a warm equipment storage garage, an equipment maintenance garage, our district's facilities maintenance building and a multiagency office complex. We are willing to invest in modifications to any of these facilities heat infrastructure to connect to the heat loop if it makes good fiscal sense. We support AGSD's application for a grant from AEA to design and build a heat loop originating from the AGSD wood boiler facility. I am responsible for protecting the State's investment and spending our annual budget in a conservative fashion. For every dollar I save on heat, I can spend it on the highways and airports to "Get Alaska Moving through service and infrastructure". We are pleased that the proposed project would offer lower and more stable heat energy prices for the future. You are welcome to contact me with any questions.
