Alaska Power & Telephone (AP&T) is assessing the viability of a woody biomass -fired
combined heat and power (CHP) plant, potentially scaled at 2+Megawatts. The plant
would produce enough thermal energy to heat many of the community buildings in
the area, including the buildings being considering by Alaska Gateway School District
heat loop proposal.
Alaska Gateway School District is pursuing funding for a small district heat loop
serving several buildings in the vicinity of the Tok school campus. The shared goals of
AP&T and the School District include lowering the costs of energy for the community,
and working to create local jobs through long-term valuable use of biomass that would
otherwise be wildfire hazardous fuels. The details of an arrangement are yet to be
finalized, where AP&T may be the administrator of the system, local contractors may
be the operators, and the school, the utility and the Tok community will share the
benefits. An AP&T biomass CHP system could combine with a School District heating
system to create a larger community -scale district -heating loop.
The School District and AP&T have identified the opportunity for collaboration and
based on these discussions and the long-term potential for collaborative mutual
benefit, AP&T is supportive of the School District's effort to develop a district heat
loop. Al
