I Alaska Energy Authority,
KENAI PENINSULA BOROUGH SCHOOL DISTRICT
Office of Superintendent
Dr. Steve Atwater
This letter is to express the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District's (KPBSD)
support for the Seward Schools Biomass Heating Systems project.
The escalating costs of heating fuel make renewable energy options increasingly
attractive to our school district. KPBSD is interested in the potential for cost
savings and cost stability, along with the economic benefits of using more localized
and renewable fuels for heat.
The District supports the application for a grant from Alaska Energy Authority
through the Renewable Energy Fund Round V, to conduct a Feasibility Study on
the use of biomass heating systems for the Seward schools. The District will
commit $10,000 in matching funds from General Fund expenditures and $37,740
in in-kind contributions.
Because the funding for public education is becoming tighter, KPBSD recognizes
the need to, when possible, move away from using non-renewable energy sources.
We are pleased that the proposed project does just this.
I Sincerely,
I Steve Atwater, Ph.D.
Superintendent
