Subject: Seward Schools Biomass Heating System Feasibility Study
To: Kenai Peninsula Borough School District
Alaska Energy Authority,
This letter is to express our support for the Seward Schools Biomass Heating Systems project.
The escalating costs of heating fuel make renewable energy options increasingly attractive,
especially to schools and other public buildings. We are interested in the potential for cost
savings and cost stability, along with the economic benefits of using more localized and
renewable fuels for heat.
We support the School District in applying for a grant from Alaska Energy Authority through the
Renewable Energy Fund Round V, to conduct a Feasibility Study on the use of biomass heating
systems for the Seward schools.
Our institutional commitment to renewable fuels, carbon reduction and green practices are an
important part of our mission. We at the Forest Service have taken many steps and initiated
many programs to work towards a smaller carbon footprint. Some of these include: paper
reduction by converting to electronic versions of forms and Aglearn training systems, placing
video conferencing equipment at all of our offices to reduce travel and cut down on use of fossil
fuels, Installing florescent or energy saving light bulbs throughout our facilities, placing wood
biomass boilers in some facilities, also using water saving devices and purchasing hybrid
vehicles are just some of the things we have done to show our commitment to renewable energy
and green practices.
