Wallis Chief, State, 'Tribal and Local Programs Save America's Treasures Heritage Preservation Services, National Park Service 1201 Eye Street, NW & Floor (ORG. 2255) Washington, D.C.20005 Dear Mr. Wallis, The Sitka Maritime Xeritage. Society is applying For a Save America's Treasures grant toward restoring the Japousld Island Boathouse in Sitka, Alaska. The restored building will be a maritime heritage center, with boat repair and interactive exhibits, and a World War II interpretive center for the Sitka Naval Operating Base and Army Coastal Defenses National Historic Landmark The Maritime heritage Society with the City and Borough of Sitka has completed a hazardous materials survey, structural stu:vey and schematic plan. A business plan outlines sustainability of the center. The work has been supported by federal historic preservation Fund grants. A National Trust for historic Preservation grant, and local contributions. This work has been done in close collaboration with local, state and federal preservation organizations. The project has broad coma unity support. The City and Borough of Sidra has recently acquired the property and is leasing it to the. Maritime Heritage Society in order to restore the Boathouse. Thu building is an authentic and important put of the Landmark and needed for interpreting to the public the role Alaska played in World War 11, Sitka's maritime heritage that will be presented in the renovated building is perhaps the richest on the west coast, and in danger of disappearing. Sitka is an important fishing port, an ancient Tlingit village, and Russian colonial shipbuilding center. The renovation will be an important part of Sitka's economic development. Sitka's remote location and rich history make heritage tourism appropriate for development. This project will benefit local people and the nation, as visitors can experience an authentic piece; of Alaska's rich heritage. I highly recommend this project for a Save America's Treasures grant, Sincerely, Ql-k"-w r, L rvll, Peggy Wilson.
