Port Alsworth Wood Boiler Study
RBA Job No. LP-02 June 1, 2010
The following buildings were considered as potential sites for wood boiler application:
A. Bldg. #12, School:
The boilers for the school are located in the Power Plant which holds two (2) Burnham
Model 904A with supply temperature of 170 degrees. The building has a forced air
system. The Mechanical Room has a mixing box with a heat exchanger. There is a small
secondary heat exchanger for the kitchen area. There is an indirect fired water heater, 50
gallons, a Boilermate. Estimate 500 gallons per year usage, including duplex.
B. Bldg. #17, Fire House/Pre-School:
The building is a new construction with radiant floor and two (2) boilers: Burnham PV7-
4WD, 156 MBH, water 136 MBH, fuel = 1.35 GPH. It has (2) 600 gallon fuel tanks.
Estimated fuel usage is 1,500 gallons per year. HW is indirect fired Weil-McLain – Ultra
Plus, 50 gallons. Classroom is supplemented with a Monitor 2400 heater. I was
informed that the school district leases the lower half of the building and subsidizes a
portion of the annual fuel cost. The Second Floor has an efficiency one bedroom
apartment and an office area, along with a large unfinished area. The building has two (2)
zones and pumps. In this building, the HGS/R piping from the wood boiler will be
connected to the existing hydronic heating system.
C. Wood Boiler \ Wood Shed:
One wood boiler will supply both buildings by connecting to the existing HGS/R piping
in the power plant of the school and to the existing hydronic heating system in the fire
house. The heat from the wood boiler will be delivered via arctic pipe. The wood shed
will have storage capacity for 60% of the annual wood demand. Its roof will extend over
the boiler and operating area. The wood boiler and shed will be secured by a 6’ high
chain link fence.
Economically, this option has a very slow payback. The low fuel consumption of both
buildings compared to other villages makes this location the least attractive one for wood
boilers.
Assumptions:
Wood Energy Content - Assumed to be air dried to 20% moisture.
Spruce wood including 10% dead trees
