Dear Assembly Members,
Our organization is enthusiastically in support of the Susitna Forestry Council's
proposal to designate a Susitna Valley High School Research Forest to be established
to supply the wood requirements for fueling the proposed Su Valley High school wood
boiler. A significant part of NSI's mission is to help develop teaching/learning
partnerships in our community. In addition to its economical and practical value, the
Susitna Forestry Council's project proposal has the potential to provide students with
the hands on kind of learning that brings value to both teacher and learner. This fits our
mission perfectly; we would be honored to be involved in its implementation.
We can see enormous potential for offering students an opportunity to participate
in the wide variety of real world learning experiences this project could provide.
Partnering local experts with Su Valley students and staff to address issues of land use
management, land restoration practices, renewable energy and sustainability practices,
local wood product generation, wood boiler design, construction and maintenance and
other related vocational and academic learning opportunities could integrate the
classroom with the workplace in a real world context that benefits partners, our
community and the Borough.
We feel that assisting the development of partnerships of this kind as well as
promoting value-added sustainability for our community is of immeasurable importance,
and strongly urge your support of this project.
