To Whom It May Concern:
Alaska Power & Telephone Company supports the efforts of Village Wind Power LLC to
develop wind power generation at Grizzly Lake, near Slana, Alaska. This project would
significantly diminish the use of fossil fuel at our diesel generation plant in Slana which
provides electricity along the Tok Cutoff, from milepost 40 to 91, and to the
communities of Slana and Chistochina. In addition, Mentasta will be incorporated into
our Slana-Chistochina grid in 2010.
Currently, we are exploring the viability of hydro generation to augment our diesel
plant. The combination of wind energy and hydro electricity has the potential of
eliminating our dependence on fossil fuel at our Slana facility, which would result in
significant cost savings to our customers and reduce our carbon footprint; in turn
benefiting the people and businesses residing in this vast area.
