Box 9 Denali Park, AK 99755 L7425 (DENA) November 4, 2008 Gordon Carlson President, Native Village of Cantwell Post Office Box 94 Cantwell, Alaska 99729 Subject: Jack River Hydro Project Dear Mr. Carlson: Denali National Park and Preserve supports the proposed feasibility study for a hydro project on the Jack River near Cantwell. We understand that a system containing a Penstock/Pelton wheel may work for this location. We believe that this type of system could provide a low impact solution for Cantwell much like the system powering the new Eielson Visitor Center in the park. It is important for Alaska to look for ways to diversify the power supplying the electric grid. Renewable energy sources are an important consideration in this effort. Denali National Park and Preserve is the States only Class 1 air shed — as such renewable energy sources such as hydro should be given a high priority when the facilities will be located near the park. The Denali Fault runs close by the Jack River and could pose a threat to any large containment efforts. We hope that this can be factored in to the feasibility study. We look forward to participating with this effort in the future. Sincerely, , pa Paul R. Anderson Superintendent, Denali National Park and Preserve
