HomeMy WebLinkAboutLetter of recommendation Page 3competent as he is a runner, his true calling seems to be cross-country skiing. He has
been in the top four of East's powerful Gross -Country Ski Team, being recognized as
Most Valuable Male Skier for the last two years.
As a life-long Alaskan, Erin is an outdoors person. He enjoys the traditional camping,
hiking, and fishing that we all enjoy, of course. He is a mountain biker and mountain
runner. During summers, he has taken jobs in the Alaskan flight industry, working as
"dock boy" for several well -respected flight services. Having flight access to Alaska (his
father is a pilot) has instilled a deep appreciation for his state.
Erin Phillips has a mind of the first water: quick, perceptive, and deep. He is often the
first student in my AP class to grasp a concept, and is quite often the first to articulate
the relationships among somewhat disparate concepts. He was the first in class, for
example, to see the intrinsic relationship between time -varying electric and magnetic
fields. As it should be, induction was a prediction rather than a fact to be learned. In
addition to his intellect, I have found him to be a loyal and interesting friend. Our AP
class is the last of the day, so Erin delays his departure until the school buses leave be-
fore venturing onto the roads. Those forty-five minutes allows us to pursue some eso-
teric topics after school. His deep hunger for understanding has awakened an interest
in cosmology and high energy physics, not the usual fare for high school students.
Whether his career be in cosmology or high energy physics, or in aerospace engineer-
ing, I predict that he will make a worthy contribution.
1 have known Erin through one and one quarter school year: through Galilean kinemat-
ics and Newtonian dynamics in Physics 1, and now through Einstein's Special and Gen-
eral Relativity in the more complex material in AP Physics. I feel qualified to assess this
outstanding young mane i give Mr. Erin Phillips my highest recommendation. He will be
an asset to any school or program that his good judgment might select.
