HomeMy WebLinkAbout5 C BSNC Wind ResolutionMAIL �A� IYYY •• II JIII IIIIII' W%ilPllllll111 lii icelLA BERINCi A RESOLUTION TO SEEK FUNDING FOR INSTALLATION OF A WIND GENERATION FACILITY IN NOME, ALASKA WHEREAS, the Mission Statement of Bering Straits Native Corporation (BSNC) is: `To improve the quality of life of our people through economic development while protecting our land and preserving our culture and heritage.'; and WHEREAS, the development of alternative energy sources is in keeping with the Mission Statement of BSNC; and WHEREAS, the extremely high cost of energy in the Bering Straits region places an undue burden on the BSNC Shareholders and their families, a large percentage of whom live below the poverty level; and WHEREAS, many of BSNC's Shareholders and their families live in remote communities where electricity is provided by diesel -fueled generators and where fuel can only be delivered by prohibitively expensive barge and air tankers; and WHEREAS, it is the desire of BSNC to install alternative energy sources throughout the Bering Straits region to lower the burden on its Shareholders and the other residents of the region by providing renewable, environmentally safe alternative energy. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Directors of the Bering Straits Native Corporation authorizes staff to take steps to secure funding for a wind energy installation in Nome, Alaska, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that no less than 50% of BSNC's annual profits from the wind farm will be reinvested into alternative energy projects throughout the region, and that the power generated by these projects will be provided at a rate which is below the "avoided cost" formula, thereby providing an actual benefit to the residents of the region, the majority of whom are BSNC Shareholders or descendants.
