Box 281 Nome, Alaska 99762 (907) 443-6663 Fax (907) 443-5349 September 30, 2007 Mr. Jerald Brown, Vice President Bering Straits Native Corporation PO Box 1008 Nome, Alaska 99762 RE: HIGH ENERGY COST GRANT PROGRAM Dear Mr. Brown, Nome Common Council Stan Andersen Mary Knodel Randy Pomeranz Jon Larson Jerald Brown Mary David The City of Nome is in support of Bering Straits Native Corporation's application for the USDA "High Energy Cost Grant Program" to construct a 300-500 kW wind farm in the Nome area in partnership with Sitnasuak Native Corporation. Nome Joint Utility System has been investigating wind generation and has completed one year of wind studies. Last year I requested assistance from the US Department of Energy and the Alaska Energy Authority to perform an analysis of options available to the City for Nome for electrical power production and space heating and to reduce our dependency of diesel fuel. This assessment has identified wind generation to be the one of the alternative energy sources for the City of Nome. The report will be completed in two weeks. High energy costs continue to have a serious effect not only our City budgets, but also our local economy. The money paid for diesel is immediately exported out of our economy. High energy costs affect our elders who are on a fixed income. Wind generation will create a local industry and is of the size to allow the community and NJUS to get experience with wind. We look forward to the options `Sincerely, Denise Michels Mayor cc: John Handeland, NJUS Randy Romenesko, City Manager
