Randy Maag, at Petrostar Valdez Refinery, was contacted and informed us that our originally cnvisioacd high temperature waste heat off the top of the crude heater is already being planned for me by another project. The waste heat he was referring to that is available is the heat from the crude tower overhead vapors that is currently being removed with air fin fan coolers. This is low temperature waste heat at 215 to 2lrF. with a total heat duty currently of 33 MMBTUIhr, when cooled to 105°F. An ammonia absorption refrigeration system is the tape of refrigeration system that would roost jjkqLv be aide to make use of this waste heat and be able to produce the degree of cooling required to attain —20r°F. in a cold storage facility. Ammonia absorption systems typically require a horter temperature heat source than 21 HOF. to achieve the required cold temperature, but due to the relatively cool ambient temperatures in Valdez in the sutmzner, the lower temperature %age heat should be sufficient. Not all of this waste heat will be useable though, only the higher temperature part of it from 218 to about 173°F. which equates to 15.4 NAMBTUIhr. at the current refinery crude rate of 45,000 bpd- The remaining crude tower overhead condenser duty will need to be cooled using the air fin fan coolers. C5-07-03 16.10 From -Alaska Anvil, Inc 507-279-4088 T-707 P 003/Ct4 F-005 Mr. Jason Wells ALASKA ANVIL INCORPORATED Valdez F:sheries Page 2 It is estimated that the refrigeration system will have a Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 0.32. which means that the 15.4 MlvfBT" I/hr of waste heat will equate to 411 tons of refrigeration (TR). Extra care will need to be taken to minimize the temperature losses and squeeze the approach temperatures in the heat exchangers. which means that the size of heat exchangers, and thus cost, will need to increase to accommodate this. .also the only way this is feasible is to take advanuige of the relatively cool ambient temperature in Valdez even in the surnmettime. More than likely there will need to be a coaling water tower to get the most cooling possible for the condensing stage of the anuncinia column. This tower could then be shut down and drained in all but the warmest couple of months in the summer. With these enhancements, it is envisioned that an arnrnonia absorption refrigeration system using waste heat from the Crude tower overhead will produce about 411 TR with an evaporator temperature of —25T. to maintain the cold storage facility at —20T. The rennery was envisioned to operate at 60,000 bpd feed crude rate, which would mean that. if the crude rate increased, there would be an additional 33% of crude tower overhead heat available, which could equate to an additional 33% cooling or as touch as of 1447 TR. The following is an approximation of the freezing and storage process as we envision it, along with the tons of refrigeration (TR) required.
