I am writing to commend the Bering Straits Native Corporation (BSNC) for your
proposal to obtain federal assistance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Utility
Service "high cost" energy program in order to build a wind fans near Nome,
I understand you are seeking funding to install wind turbines which total 300-500
kilowatts in electric generation capacity in order to lower energy costs in Nome. I also
understand that you are seeking to "recycle" half of your profits to fund additional renewable
energy projects throughout the region to provide lower -cost power on a more regional basis.
Given the extreme economic hardship that diesel fuel price increases have triggered this
year throughout rural Alaska, I applaud your efforts to develop and implement a comprehensive
energy plan which very well could become a model for how renewable wind energy can better be
integrated into the electrical generation plans for many rural villages in western and southern
Alaska.
If I can do anything to further support your grant request before federal agencies do not
hesitate to contact my energy legislative assistant, Chuck Kleeschulte, at (202) 224-9306. Good
luck and I hope that federal agencies will fully support your village's efforts to conserve energy
and promote energy efficiency.
Sincerely,
CJ Lisa Murkowski
United States Senator
