The application we are submitting requests funding to complete a Feasibility Study and Conceptual Design for a two wood burners/boilers for the community of Kasaan. The first would be used to provide heat and hot water to all of Kasaan’s community buildings, and the second would be part of the Tribally owned Discovery Lodge eco- and cultural tourism facility that is currently in the engineering design phase. Prince of Wales Island has an almost unlimited supply of wood and waste wood that can be used as fuel for a wood boiler. We believe that these new energy plants will have a significant impact on reducing the electricity and diesel fuel that is currently used to heat our community buildings, offices and school. In addition, we are proposing that the Feasibility Study and Conceptual Designs also explore the possibility of designing a wood fired “combined heat and power plant” (CHP) that would be feasible to operate on a small scale for a rural community the size of Kasaan. We look forward to working with the AEA on this important project. Although we are just in the preliminary stages of determining the feasibility of developing alternative energy options for Kasaan, our community and our Tribe are committed to finding ways to be better stewards of our resources and making Kasaan an affordable community to live and raise a family.
