RGY Mr. Butch White, Grant Manager Renewable Energy Grant Program Alaska Energy Authority 813 West Northern Lights Blvd. Anchorage, Alaska 99503 Re: AGE's Girdwood Renewable Application of New Technology (GRANT) Dear Mr. White: Alaska Green Energy, LLC (AGE) in collaboration with UAA's School of Engineering is pleased to submit the attached Renewable Energy Fund Grant Application titled Girdwood Renewable Application of New Technology. Girdwood is unique in Alaska with micro -hydro, wind, solar, and tidal renewable energy resources that can serve as a classroom for University research and education activities. We propose to develop micro -hydro, solar and wind generating units that can be tied into natural gas combined heat and power, interfaced with a thermal electric generation system to serve Girdwood Elementary School and the proposed UAA Renewable Energy Research and Discovery Center. The education, research and demonstration value of this project for UAA is tremendous as UAA moves to add a Renewable Energy Curriculum to their School of Engineering. The UAA Renewable Energy Research and Discovery Center is funded with other sources. Specifically, this project will construct micro -hydro facilities at California and Virgin Creeks and construct a small scale wind generator and a grid -tied solar unit at the CHP facility. The CHP facility will be constructed near the Girdwood Elementary School and will be integrated with a thermal electric generation unit, using the balance of the heat load. The public benefits of this project are significant and are related to reducing the heating and power costs and the carbon footprint of the school. It will provide educational and research opportunities for UAA; and, ultimately provide public information and education opportunities. As well as being the future UAA Girdwood Renewable Energy Discovery Center it will provide FREE heat and power back to the Center. The most significant benefit of the GRANT project is these road accessible renewable energy projects having direct application to rural Alaskan communities. UAA research into northern climate renewable energy systems will benefit future rural designs and training and also have potential wind and hydro resources to help alleviate their high energy costs. AGE's team is a group of long time and passionate Alaskans who have come together to foster the development of alternative and renewable energy systems in Alaska with a focus on resolving rural Alaska's high cost of energy. AGE is certified by FERC to operate CHP systems. UAA will provide engineering, environmental and socio-economic support and provide education opportunities to students and interns. Brian Yanity and other engineers with NANA Pacific Engineers will provide engineering assistance for all phases of this project. We can move this project forward quickly with pre -construction phases starting immediately and operations commencing in 2010. We look forward working with you on this project.
