To whom it may concern:
NANA Regional Corporation (NRC) is taking an aggressive move in pursuing renewable
energy via the "Renewable Energy Project" proposal for the Alaska Energy Authority.
Recent surveys has shown that the NANA Region residents are supportive of renewable
energies and are willing to participate in bringing forth renewable energy projects. High
energy costs are motivating NANA Region residents to look for new energy sources and
identifying ways to harness these energy sources for their communities.
NRC is committed to helping the Northwest Inupiaq Housing Authority (NWIHA) to
develop a phased application of a scaled woody biomass energy system for the Upper
Kobuk Region. The Upper Kobuk Region includes Kobuk, Shungnak, and Ambler.
NRC will help develop these projects by providing services of Projects Manager Sonny
Adams, Lands Director Abraham Snyder and Assistant Director Jeff Nelson. The
Biomass Team will be supported by senior management, the President's office and Vice
President Walter Sampson.
In addition to providing services to the biomass project, NANA Regional Corporation
will contribute $25,000 as a partial project match. Also included will be a forestry
stewardship grant which is valued at $58,000. NANA Regional Corporation believes that
a forest management plan is an important component of our Land and Resources
Department. Furthermore, NANA Regional Corporation commissioned a $10,000 pre -
feasibility assessment of woody biomass potential in the Upper Kobuk.
As the primary landowner of much of the forest resources in the Upper Kobuk Region,
NRC will work with NWIfiA and its technical team NANA Pacific and Dr. Bill Wall on
the reconnaissance phase of the wood biomass energy program. NRC will also provide
access to its land for biomass feasibility study activities. The technical team will provide
expertise in the development of the forestry and business plan. NRC also plans on
working with some of the NANA Strategic Energy Plan members. These participants
include the Northwest Arctic Borough, Maniilaq Association and village councils in
Ambler, Shungnak, and Kobuk.
Finally, NANA Pacific and WH Pacific, affiliates of NANA Regional Corporation, will
be providing support services including project/construction management, technical and
planning services, and procurement, as the prime subcontractor.
Sincerely,
Marie N. Greene, resident
NANA Regional Corporation
