The database has been consolidated and expanded this year with the inclusion of three new tables which help to monitor the performance of the Alaska economy in the areas of general business ac ti vi ty, basic sec tor output levels, and state government asset management. In addition, each table has been revised, expanded, and updated to include information available through early 1985 . This comprehensive statistical summary of the economy covering most of the history of Alaska since statehood should be useful for: • Improving our readers' general understanding Alaska's economy and how it has grown of • Monitoring economie trends and performance in relation to past levels of activity • Providing an analytical base for projecting future directions of development and growth of the economy The information in this database cornes from a large number of federal and state government agencies as well as from analyses done by ISER. A document entitled "ISER MAP Economie Database: Data Sources and Derivations, •• which indicates the source for each variable appearing in this publication, is available upon request. This data represents a small portion of the economie, demographie, and social information that ISER collects, monitors, disseminates, and makes available to the public upon request. ._ ,_ """"' .._ 1 - ..... - ,_ - GLOSSARY OF TERMS BASIC INDUSTRIES produce exportable commodities or services demanded by consumers outside the state that drive the economy. The former category includes agriculture, forestry, mining, petroleum, fishing, and directly related portions of construction and transportation. The latter includes tourism as well as f~deral civilian and military activities. An ENCLAVE ACTIVITY is a self-contained project, such as the Trans- Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS), which has little interaction with the local economy but may influence the state economy. North Slope petroleum development is also defined as enclave . An ENDOGENOUS variable is one whose value is dependent upon the level of aggregate economie activity in the state. Endogenous state revenues consist of those taxes whose receipts rise and fall with the general level of economie activity. INFRASTRUCTURE INDUSTRIES comprise the public utili ty, transporta- tion, communication, business, and other systems needed by basic and support industries to function properly. SUPPORT INDUSTRIES produce goods and services which are purchased by basic industries and Alaska residents. These include most of services and trade, real estate, finance, and insurance. - ._ i....d· ..... - .... - - ,_ - LIST OF TABLES 1.
