CURRENT STATUS
In FY 2018, AEA’s training program is coordinating two Power Plant Operator courses, one
Advanced Power Plant Operator course, and three Bulk Fuel Operator courses. New this
year we will be adding an Itinerant training program. We anticipate reaching 30
communities in FY18.
So Far in FY 2018, Eight students completed the fall Bulk Fuel Operator course, seven
students completed Power Plant Operator #1 and fourteen students completed the Power
Plant Operator #2 course, and eight completed the Advanced Power Plant Operator course.
The Bulk Fuel Operator Course begins April 16th and currently has eight students signed up.
Power Plant Operator Training is the entry-level eight-week course for power plant
operators providing the necessary skills to operate and maintain a power plant. In FY2018,
seven students completed the first half of the power plant course and fourteen students
have been trained and certified in this course.
The Advanced Power Plant Operator Training provides students the necessary knowledge
and skills to diagnose and repair power plant failures. This is a three-week course and
participants must be certified in the Power Plant Operator course prior to being accepted
into the advanced course. In FY2018, there were eight trained in advanced power plant
operations.
Bulk Fuel Operator Training provides students the knowledge and skills necessary to safely
operate and maintain a bulk fuel storage facility while complying with state and federal
laws. This is a two-week course. In FY2018, eight people were trained in bulk fuel
operations. There are two more classes starting April 16th and April 30th.
Itinerant Training ensures that the bulk fuel operators are adequately operating and
maintaining the bulk fuel facility and allows the instructor to provide follow-up training
specific to the needs of the local facility.
Training is scheduled to start this spring and be completed by December 2018. We are
reaching out to thirty communities.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Proper maintenance of energy infrastructure is an essential component of delivering safe
and reliable power to a community. The Alaska Energy Authority provides training
opportunities for local residents to learn how to operate and maintain their energy
infrastructure and to assist utilities to keep their facilities code-compliant and managed
sustainably.
AEA contracts with Alaska Vocational Technical Center (AVTEC) in Seward to deliver bulk
fuel, itinerant, and power plant operator training courses.
AEA also provides training for utility clerks on the Power Cost Equalization (PCE) program,
Regulatory Commission of Alaska (RCA) reporting, the bulk fuel loan application process
and general accounting practices on an as-available basis.
