CURRENT STATUS
In FY 2019, AEA’s training program is coordinating two Power Plant Operator courses, one
Advanced Power Plant Operator course, and three Bulk Fuel Operator courses. We will be
continuing the Itinerant Bulk Fuel training program. We anticipate reaching 30 communities
in FY18‐FY19. We are in the planning and procurement stages of our Utility Itinerant
program, through which we hope to reach 20 communities over the next two years.
Classes began in in September 2018 and run through May 2019 at AVTEC. We are currently
accepting applications for all future classes.
Power Plant Operator Training is the entry‐level eight‐week course for power plant
operators providing the necessary skills to operate and maintain a power plant. We had
twelve students receive certificates this past year.
The Advanced Power Plant Operator Training provides students the necessary knowledge
and skills to diagnose and repair power plant failures. This is a three‐week course and
participants must be certified in the Power Plant Operator course prior to being accepted
into the advanced course. We have seven students currently attending this course.
Bulk Fuel Operator Training provides students the knowledge and skills necessary to safely
operate and maintain a bulk fuel storage facility while complying with state and federal
laws. This is a two‐week course. In FY2019, we anticipate training 30 students. We trained
twelve students receive certificates in the fall class. Spring session begins April 15, 2019.
Itinerant Bulk Fuel Operator Training ensures that the bulk fuel operators are adequately
operating and maintaining the bulk fuel facility and allows the instructor to provide follow‐
up training specific to the needs of the local facility.
Training started in May 2018. We are reaching out to thirty communities. So far, we have
traveled to Alakanuk, Chalkyitsik, Chignik Lagoon, Eek, Goodnews Bay, Kipnuk, Newtok,
Nunapitchuk, Saint Mary’s, Quinhagak, Togiak, Tuluksak, Old Harbor, Tuntutuliak, and
Venetie.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Proper maintenance of energy infrastructure is an essential component of delivering safe
and reliable power to a community. The Alaska Energy Authority provides training
opportunities for local residents to learn how to operate and maintain their energy
infrastructure and to assist utilities to keep their facilities code‐compliant and managed
sustainably.
AEA contracts with Alaska Vocational Technical Center (AVTEC) in Seward to deliver bulk
fuel, itinerant, and power plant operator training courses.
