Subject: Mix Design — 4500 psi
Gentlemen:
Attached are the results of a trial batch prepared in the laboratory. The aggregate
properties are shown on the attached sheet.
Also attachedarethe results of the trial batch. The aggregates used for the trial
batch included a mixed sand and gravel supplemented with a small amount of
crushed aggregate.
The ACI and International building codes require 1200-psi strength overdesign for
this specified strength for a plant without an extensive strength test record. The
average target strength is 5700 psi. The 4500-psi specification is required by the
building codes primarily for durability of outdoor placements. The strength will be
sensitive to air content, with higher air content exhibiting lower strength. Strength will
be most reliably achieved with the greatest strength overdesign when the air content
is maintained near the specified minimum: however, durability will be best near the
maximum specified air content.
The specific gravity and absorption of the aggregate is as follows:
Aggregate SSD Specific Gravity
Absorption
Coarse Portion -
2.641
1.55%
Fine Portion -
2.589
2.20 %
Weighted Average, Mixed.Agg.
2.607
1.98%
Weighted Average, Crushed Agg.
2.634
1.63%
The water and aggregate quantities shown on the mix design are for saturated
surface dry (SSD) aggregates. The actual aggregates will be wetter than SSD. The
catching quantities for water and aggregate need to be adjusted to account for the
free moisture in the aggregates.- The attached batching table will aid in making the
adjustment. -
Sincerely,
p r 55 CJ33cc-'

CAST -IN -PLACE CONCRETE
Pour Plan
Hardest Construction, hie. proposes a three (3) pour procedure for construction of the truck till
containment areas. Each containment area will require the same 3 step approach, hoever in some
cases the work may occur concurrently ie: the sump bottom of the next work area may be poured
as the approach slabs of a finished area is completed.
The following sequence is expected to be reasonable procedure to satisfy the intended design for
the containment slabs.
l" Pour Bottom of the 2' x 2' sump up to the bottom elevation of the 8" slab.
Elev. = 18.65 Prior to the 2"a pour a hydrophilic waterstop will be
installed in this cold joint.
2ntl Pour The entire containment portion will be constructed without cold joints as
a monolithic pour.
Concrete will be placed in the raised curb formwork first to allow a set to
begin. Concrete will then be placed and graded throughout the
containment. The curb formwork pins will be removed while the slab
concrete is still plastic enough to fill the impression of the removed pins..
A broom finish will be applied, the entire exposed surface will be wetted
and an impervious sheet will be placed to maintain minimum moisture
loss.
The moisture cure will be interrupted long enough to saw cut the crack
control joints and then re -wetted and covered. The crack control joints
will be cleaned and filled with Sikaflex 2c SL after a full cure of the
concrete is achieved.
3" Pour The roll -up approach slabs will be constructed, broom finish, wetted and
covered to maintain minimum moisture loss.
All concrete pours will be scheduled during a favorable weather outlook. No exposed
concrete pours will be attempted during inclement or unfavorable weather conditions.
