AEA Grant 2195423
Wrangell Hydro Based Electric Boilers Construction
As of December 31, 2011
The project is 100% complete. This includes all work performed and all paperwork needed for
final completion, including as -builts by the electrical engineer, Earl George of EPS, Inc.
The work done under this grant included:
1. Distribution work on the power system so that it would accommodate the electrical loads
of the new electric boilers.
2. Installation and integration of new electrical boilers into the existing heating systems at
the high school, Public Safety Building and the Nolan Center and Civic Center. The
process include retaining the ability to heat with fuel oil in the event Tyee was to go
down or in any other case where electric heat was not able to be used.
3. The overall project costs came in within the funds available. We have included all In -
kind costs with this request.
Additional Benefits of the project:
4. Currently in Wrangell, it is approximately 37% cheaper for the city to heat with electric
than heating oil.
5. According to our maintenance staffs, the electric boilers are cheaper to maintain and do
not require as much maintenance.
6. And although electric heat may be more efficient than heating oil, in our case there are
huge cost savings and it is friendlier to the environment.
Summary:
We believe this project has been a huge success in Wrangell. I know all the various folks
involved are more than happy with the results and operations of the new boilers. The cost
savings in both energy and maintenance costs is another positive.
