Progress Report
Grantee: City and Borough of Yakutat
Project Name: Biomass-Feasibility
Grant #2195424
Period of Report: August 2011
Project Activities Completed:
The major program activities in August 2011 included:
• CHP Plant #1 Concept Design – 80% EV
• District Heating System Concept Design – CHP #1 – 80% EV
• District Heating System Concept Design – CHP #2 – 80% EV
• Boiler Specification – 95% EV
• Final Specification Review with multiple suppliers – 60% EV
• Business Plan Support – 5%
CHP Plant #1 – Concept Design (80% EV)
The CHP plant #1 concept design, with a combined capacity of 20 MWth including
power production of 1.5 MWe is nearing completion.
The plant capacity is designed with 25% margin under the most extreme conditions.
Two design engineers have been commissioned to begin plant layout drawings which will
submitted as part of the final feasibility and concept design report. The drawings will
include P&ID, plan and elevation view drawings. The drawings are scheduled for
completion in late October.
CHP Plant #1 – District Heating Concept Design (80% EV)
The unique design of the district heating system for both CHP plants 1 and 2 increases
the combined cycle efficiency by reducing or eliminating the heat rejection to the
environment by the ORC condenser. This design reduces capital, maintenance and
operating costs due to the elimination of cooling towers, and eliminates the need of tower
makeup water or radiator convection blowers.
In addition, several energy monitoring systems are being prepared to enable the
owner/operators of the future biomass plant to monitor the amount of thermal district
heating energy each user is consuming. Thus, effective “use-based” energy rates may be
employed if defined as such in a power-purchase agreement.
CHP Plant #2 – District Heating Concept Design
The district heating system design for CHP plant #2 continues on schedule, with layouts
expected to be completed in September.
Biomass Heater Specification & Manufacturer Review
A final draft of the biomass heater specification was completed in August and sent to
heater manufacturers for comments and budgetary quotes to be completed in September.
Business Plan Support
The CHP team provides on-going support to the Yak-tat Kwaan in the development of
the Biomass Development Business Plan, the last major deliverable of the project.
Existing or Potential Problems:
The CHP concept design team continues in accordance with the approved revised project
plan, with completion by November and within budget.
No potential problems are forecasted for the next month.
Activities Targeted for Next Reporting Period:
• CHP plant #1 Concept Design – layout complete
• CHP plant #1 District Heating Concept Design – layout complete
• CHP plant #2 District Heating Concept Design – layout complete
• Biomass Heater Budget Quotes
• Organic Rankine Cycle – Layout
• CHP Plant 1 Concept Drawings (20% EV)
• Design Report (20% EV)
