What building is used for and how much usage Ahtna Incorporated, State of Alaska
courthouse, Ahtna Heritage, USDA-NRCS, Grizzly Tax Service
Distance between buildings (if multiple buildings) N/A
2. Current fuel situation
For each building, please discuss:
Type of fuel used to heat the building (#1 fuel oil, #2 fuel oil, propane, etc.) The building
is heated with #1 fuel oil
Average annual fuel consumption (gallons, etc.) 19,300 gallons
Fuel cost per unit ($/gallon, etc.) Current price $4.02 per gallon
Cost of electricity -per kilowatt-hour $0.23 per hour
Presence of high -hazard forest fuels
Describe any forest fires or insect outbreaks in the past 5 years. Shakenaw Fire -McCarthy
60,000 acres, Glellahena Fire- 1300 acres, 1,000,000 acres of beetle -kill on BLM, DNR,
Ahtna lands
Discuss any activities to utilize dead/dying material. Shareholder firewood and house log
program, Ahtna Sales, Copper Valley Biomass Cluster Group
Discuss any activities or programs that would mitigate the effects of future fires or infestations.
Moose browse inhancement project of approximately 7,500.Village firewise projects through
BIA, active timber sales..
Other Land Management Issues
Discuss the ownership of nearby forest lands and any agreements there may be to harvest trees
(live or dead) from those lands. (Where would you plan on getting wood from?) Commercial
Wood Sales with BLM, DNR, and Ahtna to Regal Ent., Bengston Logging, etc.
Discuss the extent and sustainability of local forest resources and wood supply. The Copper
Valley has approximately 1 million acres of harvestable biomass with Ahtna owning 3,000,000 tons
of woody biomass. Most of which is accessible and will be made available for long term harvest
contracts. Additionally, DNR-Forestry does most of the Fire Mitigation work in the area and can
dispose of material in the heating system.
Discuss wildlife management or other forest health issues you may have. Currently CVDA is
1. working in conjunction with Copper Country Alliance (a regional environmental group), Ecotrust,
and there are EIAs and Stewardship Plans for harvestable areas.
Is there a LAND MANAGEMENT PLAN in place for the area of wood source, if so please
discuss. Yes, BLM, DNR and Ahtna have all completed the Stewardship plans and harvest
plans for their lands.
5. Availability of wood processing residues (e.g., slabs, chips, bark, sawdust, shavings, etc.)
List any known wood processors within 35 miles of your location. Regal Enterprises
What do those processors currently do with their residues? Sell them Commercially
Approximately how much residue is available in each of its various forms? Regal
Enterprises has its own wood chipper and can create as much as needed if ordered. Furthermore
they have a large stockpile of wood processing residues.
Do you have access to other wood (ie drift wood, wood pellets, biobricks etc)? Pellets are made
at Superior Pellet in North Pole. Cordwood is plentiful in our area. Regal Enterprises produces and
sells woodchips in bulk.
6. Wood Fuel
If possible/feasible, provide an estimate of the amount of firewood consumed locally on an
annual basis. Approximately 5000 cord of wood are consumed by residents per year.
List any local individuals or companies that are in the firewood business. Regal Enterprises,
Bengston Bros., Youngs (Tok)
Describe the type of tree harvesting systems used locally (or system you would propose to use).
Ground Based, Feller-Buncher, Skidsteers, Firewood processors
Describe the way(s) in which firewood is processed. Chippers, Firewood processor
Describe the forms in which firewood is sold (log/long length, short lengths, split, seasoned,
green, etc.). Log Length, short length, split/delivered seasoned, green, 2" minus chips
Provide firewood costs ($ per cord) for the various forms in which it is sold.
Log Length- $1800 / 10 cords
Split/Delivered- $200/ cord
Chips- $60-$80/ ton
